NYT: The Making of Movie Cars

Car movies have been big business of late – Transformers, Death Race, The A-Team – which makes it unsurprising that the business of getting cars prepped for movies is becoming even bigger business. The upcoming Green Hornet will use 29 classic Imperials; the third film in The Fast & the Furious series needed 200 cars built and modified; and the fourth installment required 240 rebuilt rides.

One of the most sinister automotive movie characters ever, the tanker-hauling Peterbilt from the seminal Spielberg picture, Duel, is up for auction. Perhaps only a little less evil than the '58 Plymouth in John Carpenter's adaptation of Christine, nearly 40 years have done little to dull this truck's malevolent countenance. There is something terribly disturbing about announcing that a Citroën 2CV has beaten out a Lotus Esprit and a trio of Aston Martins. But the little French deux chevaux has been named the best James Bond chase car in a new 4Car poll. Piloted by Roger Moore in the classic 1981 film, "For Your Eyes Only", the duck managed to steal the top spot in the poll, which was done as part of an upcoming Jeremy Clarkson special, MPH Show '06.
